Rice Health Foundation Development Manager Jean Raatz answers the most frequently asked questions about planned giving.

What is planned giving?

Planned giving is the generous act of including the Foundation in your estate plan. It can be as simple as leaving a cash gift in your will, or naming Rice as a beneficiary in a Life Insurance, Annuity, or Retirement Plan. With the right gift plan, you can leave your legacy, protect your assets, and provide for healthy tomorrows.

Planned gifts allow you to make a long-term impact. They can be an important part of your estate planning, benefitting your family and Rice as well, while providing significant tax savings. Planned gifts are recognized in the Rice Visionary Society and are honored on the Tradition of Caring Wall. Your financial advisor can help determine which planned gift is right for you. Examples include:

  • Bequests in Your Will
  • Gifts of Life Insurance
  • Charitable Gift Annuities
  • Life Estate Agreements

What is the Rice Visionary Society?

Membership in the Rice Visionary Society is open to any individual or couple who has made provisions for Rice through their estate plan. Benefits include invitations to Foundation recognition events. As a Visionary Society member, you will also be listed in a special section of the Donor Recognition Wall and in the Foundation's Annual Report, if printed recognition is so desired.

If we include Rice in our estate plan, do we need to let you know?

We hope that you will tell us because we would very much like the opportunity to say, "Thank you for your generosity." Letting us know of your intentions does not create any obligation on your part. And, recognition of your gift may well inspire others.

How do I create a legacy of health and wellness care through Rice?

When your estate gift is added to an existing endowment or creates a new endowment, it truly is a last legacy. to establish a gift that benefits the work of Rice Memorial Hospital far into the future, ask your legal or financial advisors to name the Rice Health Foundation as a beneficiary of your will, insurance policy, retirement plan or other asset. if you, or your professional advisors, have any questions, please contact me at 320.231.4141.

How are gifts to the Foundation recognized?

It is very important to us to recognize your generosity. The "Tradition of Caring" Recognition Wall is located in the Garden Court and is one of the ways to publicly say thank you. In this display, there are opportunities for individuals and organizations to be honored in the following ways:

Tradition of Caring - gifts totaling $5,000 or more during a lifetime are honored here.

Making a Difference - annual gifts totaling $500 or more are honored here.

Members of the above Giving Clubs are invited to Rice Health Foundation's annual Donor Recognition Event, as well as other special events that may be offered.

Thoughtful Giving - this display lists the people who have been remembered with tribute gifts totaling $500 or more in the previous year.
