Building on Tradition: 2009 Grant Recipients

In the fiscal year 2009, more than $182,500 was awarded to Rice Memorial Hospital programs and the community Rice serves through grants made possible by your donations to Rice Health Foundation endowments.

These programs support and enhance the healthcare mission of Rice Memorial Hospital, while improving the health and well-being of our community in west central Minnesota. The Rice Health Foundation provides a stable and consistent source of funds to support and enhance the healthcare mission of Rice Memorial Hospital. Funds from the endowment are disbursed annually in the form of grants to worthy programs and projects of the Rice organization. A portion of the funds were also awarded to healthcare-related community programs.

All of this great work in our community happens through the dedication of our friends and neighbors, and through the generosity of people just like you.

Rice Women and Children's Care - Collaborating with Ridgewater College to bring the most up-to-date neonatal resuscitation education to Rice Hospital nurses and physicians through simulation programs. Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare - Delivering specialty services directly to individuals in our community through the Gillette Mobile Outreach Clinic located in Willmar. Rice Hospital Pharmacy - Real time documentation using bar-code technology to efficiently and safely provide the right patient with the right dose of the right drug through the right means at the right time. Rice Rehabilitation Center - Offering scholarships for aquatic therapy programs which help participants improve their cardiopulmonary fitness, flexibility, and strength.

Rice Women and Children's Care - Educating Rice RNs to serve as lactation counselors for new mothers. Lullaby Quilters - Sewing and donating baby quilts which are given to new mothers during post-partum home visits by Kandiyohi County Public Health nurses. Rice Care Center - Enriching resident life through the purchase of a golf cart for community outings, such as a short trip to the baseball field to watch a game. Rice Outreach and Community Relations - Sponsoring a Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP) Screening in the community for people at risk for developing kidney disease. KEEP Screenings are conducted by the National Kidney Foundation.

Rice Emergency Services - Advancing emergency services for the community by achieving a Level III Trauma Designation which required supplemental education for staff in the Intesive Care Unit. United Way - Providing access to early childhood and parent education through the activities of the Growmobile Learning Center. Rice Dialysis Care Unit - Providing nutritional protein supplements to improve the health of people receiving kidney dialysis treatments. Willmar Public Schools - Protecting the school community through immunization compliance and identifying individual health needs.

Rice School of Radiologic Technology - Providing the most current curriculum modules in Computed Tomography for radiologic technology students. ARC Kandiyohi County - Offering an eight-week program for people with developmental disabilities to teach them how to increase their healthy eating and fitness levels, and encourage them to do so. Rice Nursing - Increasing safety through the use of HoverMatts and pumps when moving patients. Rice Cardiovascular Health and Rehabilitation - Offering heart health educational resources through community health fairs, screenings, worksite wellness programs, and group presentations.

Ridgewater College - Transforming the education of healthcare workers in our region through collaborative efforts between Ridgewater College and healthcare professionals. Willmar Community Senior Network - Volunteers serving elders through the Living at Home Block Nurse Program to help them remain independent in their community, safely, in good health, and at home. Rice Rehabilitation Center - Providing specialized information processing and reading skill therapy programs for patients who have received a diagnosis such as a stroke or a brain injury. Women and Children's Care - Making infant massage classes available to parents so that they can help their babies relax, sleep better, enhance nervous system development and reduce the discomfort of teething or colic.

Rice Laboratory - Tracking lab specimens delivered by hospital couriers using a hand-held scanner and internet-based software. Southern Minnesota Area Health Education Center (AHEC) - Giving students a hands-on experience to encourage them to explore careers in healthcare. Rice Nursing - Delivering updated patient education materials through a video-on-demand and closed-circuit TV system. Pulmonary Rehabilitation - Expanding educational and rehabilitation services for patients diagnosed with chronic lung disease.

Coalition for Healthy Adolescent Sexuality (CHAS) - A community collaborative providing parents with the educational tools to support their role as primary sexuality educators of their children.
